Accession Data:

  • Accession # 201000051
  • Source: Frank Omilian
  • Provenance: Originally acquired from a grower in Europe who would not say where he had gotten it. The plant is unusual in having narrow to spatulate leaves, a bicolored caudex and “winged edges” on the leaf bases (clypeoli). In Europe the sentiment is that these are young plants of the highland species Myrmecodia lamii that will “grow into” more typical Myrmecodia lamii form. I and some Europeans, however, don't think that is the case and suspect that this represents an undescribed species of Myrmecodia. I say that because there are 6 seeds per fruit (lamii has 4), the anthers are 1mm long (lamii 2.5 mm), there is a ring of hairs in the petal tube (none in lamii), the stigma is below the anthers (even in lamii) and there are differences in the extent of clypeoli wings and tuber spination.1
